Artist Statement
Having recently moved to the Long Island shoreline from New Mexico, I'm very taken by the stunning contrast between this coastal environment and the high desert landscapes where I've worked for so many years.
Colors, shapes, textures and the light of the landscape are my inspirations while the printmaking process of Reduction Linocuts is my medium of choice to bring these inspirations to life. Living and traveling overseas and in the US have given me a wellspring of colors and images. Starting from a sketch, I create a multicolored reduction print from a single block of linoleum, systematically carving away what I no longer want, while mixing and applying different colors of ink until there is little left of the block. As the print comes to life, the landscape or design I started with may scarcely resemble the final product. I constantly adjust the shapes and colors depending on what occurred when the last color was applied. My learning is a continuous exploratory process and each print is a new challenge.
